Painted around 1665 by Dutch Golden Age master Johannes Vermeer, Girl with a Pearl Earring is an oil painting depicting an enigmatic young woman turned toward the viewer. Dressed in exotic attire, she wears an oriental turban and a large, luminous pearl earring that catches the light against a dark, atmospheric background. Unlike a formal commissioned portrait, the artwork is a tronie—a study of character, costume, and facial expression popular in seventeenth-century Dutch art. Known by various names throughout the centuries, it officially acquired its current title late in the twentieth century. Since 1902, the painting has been housed in the permanent collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague. Its subtle handling of light, delicate glaze effects, and haunting gaze have elevated it into one of the most celebrated and recognizable images in the Western canon, inspiring numerous literary and cinematic adaptations.
